Position Summary

The Electrician position is responsible for the repair, maintenance, and installation of Alternating Current (AC) or Direct Current (DC) electrical distribution systems and electrically powered equipment throughout the District's water plants, gas plants, and office facilities. This position will have a general and developing knowledge of District low voltage systems/equipment. This position requires the ability to perform maintenance, installation, troubleshooting and repair of District low voltage equipment/systems. Additionally, the Electrician will perform normal maintenance and repairs to medium voltage equipment/systems and will assist the Sr. Electrician when working on unusual projects or repairs to medium voltage equipment/systems. The Electrician will be expected to respond and perform general troubleshooting and repair on medium voltage systems in situations when a Sr. Electrician is not available. Low voltage systems operate at 50 to 599 volts and medium voltage systems operate at 600 volts to 15,000 volts.

 

Education

  • Required - High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Required - Minimum of 4 years of applicable work experience on industrial low and medium voltage systems and completion of an Electrical Apprenticeship training program.

 

Licenses, Certifications and/or Testing

  • Required - Have and maintain a valid driver’s license Upon Hire
  • Required - Forklift Certification within 1 Year
  • Required - Have and maintain a valid Nebraska Journeyman Electrician (JA) license (residential, fire alarm, or specialty licenses are not accepted). Upon Hire
  • Required - Employee(s) in this position are covered under the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol testing provisions. This includes post-offer, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, follow-up, and return to duty testing. Upon Hire
  • Required - Pre-employment and/or post-offer physical demands screening. Upon Hire
  • Required - Pre-employment Background Check & Drug Screen Upon Hire
  • Required - Certified to wear an Air Purifying Respirator in order to comply with confined entry procedures and/or chemical exposure. Certification requires completing a Medical Questionnaire, passing a Pulmonary Function Test, Fit Test and compliance with the guidelines of the District’s Respiratory Protection Program. within 90 Days

 

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Familiarity with personal computers, tablets, and/or other electronic devices to include familiarity with, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) and enterprise wide software (e.g., SAP). (Intermediate proficiency)
  • Working knowledge of personal computers, including their use for accessing equipment installation and repair information, for communicating with control systems, and for performing basic office computing functions.
  • Efficient written and verbal communication skills, in English, to assist internal and external customers, co-workers and management professionally, regardless of provocation. (Intermediate proficiency)
  • Proficient in maintaining and repairing low voltage electrical equipment used throughout the District, including electric motors, generators, motor controls, switch gear, variable frequency drive systems, and alarm and supervisory control systems. (Intermediate proficiency)
  • Knowledge of and basic ability to maintain and repair medium voltage electrical equipment used throughout the District. (Intermediate proficiency)
  • Working knowledge of smoke and heat detectors, infrared detectors, ultra violet detectors, and miscellaneous products of combustion detectors. (Intermediate proficiency)
  • Thorough knowledge of the work methods and the proper personal protective equipment required for working safely on low voltage equipment and the wiring methods required in explosive or potentially explosive environments (Hazardous Locations). (Advanced proficiency)
  • Proficient knowledge of safe work methods and necessary personal protective equipment to work on medium voltage equipment and systems. (Intermediate proficiency)
  • A good record of safety when performing the tasks required of previous positions and when performing other job related functions including driving a District vehicle.
  • Ability to learn new or upgraded computer software as required.

 

Essential Functions

  • Maintain, troubleshoot and repair all District low voltage electric motors, generators, motor controls, switch gear, variable frequency drives, alarm and supervisory control systems, intercom systems, power tools, plant power distribution systems, indoor and outdoor lighting, and other electrical equipment at various District water and gas plant and office facilities.
  • Plan and install small to medium sized electrical and electronic projects including conduit, conductors, and electrical equipment at all District Facilities. New circuit layout and planning with design checks by Foreman, Electrical & Instrument Maintenance.
  • Perform normal maintenance for medium voltage electric motors, switch gear, lighting, and other electrical equipment.
  • Assist the Sr. Electrician when working on unusual projects or repairs to medium voltage equipment and systems. Respond to and perform general troubleshooting and repair on medium voltage systems in situations when a Sr. Electrician is not available.
  • Set light poles and perform high-line work.
  • Install, program, and maintain Programmable Logic Systems (especially those related to electrical switchgear).
  • Locate underground power and communication cables that are maintained by the District.
  • Coordinate the work of others when appointed the task leader.
  • Assist with training or share acquired knowledge with others.
  • Assist in the ordering of parts and maintaining parts inventory.
  • Work with District Engineers, vendors, and contractors on District projects.
  • Drive District vehicles and operate a variety of equipment including, but not limited to, man lifts, overhead cranes, truck mounted cranes, bucket trucks, and forklifts.
