Position Summary
Under direct supervision, the GIS Technician I will enter record information from gas and water projects into the District's Geographic Information System (GIS) and train in the duties of a GIS Technician II. Upon successfully completing all training and proficiencies of a GIS Technician I, a recommendation can be made for advancement to the position of GIS Technician II.
Education
- Required - High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) with minimum two (2) years of relevant GIS data entry and data editing experience, as a primary job duty. This experience may be offset with a certificate or coursework towards a degree, from a college or trade school, vocation or technical school as listed in the education details. or
- Required - Associate's Degree from a trade, vocational or technical college and/or higher, with an emphasis in GIS, geography, cartography and or related fields.
Minimum Requirements
- Required - Minimum of 2 years of relevant GIS data entry and data editing experience, as a primary job duty; with a High School Diploma or General Education Diploma as listed above. This experience may be offset with a certificate or coursework towards a degree, from a college or trade school, vocation or technical school as listed in the education details. and
- Required - Experience with data entry into a Geographic Information System and understanding the criticality of attention to detail.
- Preferred - Minimum of 2 years of GIS work experience within the last three (3) years or
- Preferred - Less than 1 year of GIS experience through the recent completion of a college (or trade, vocational or technical) educational program.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Proficiency with a Geographic Information System data management software. ESRI ArcGIS Pro experience is preferred. (Intermediate proficiency)
- Proficiency with personal computers, tablets, and/or other electronic devices to include familiarity with, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word), Open Text, and enterprise wide software (e.g., SAP). (Entry proficiency)
- Efficient written and verbal communication skills, in English, to assist internal and external customers, co-workers and management professionally, regardless of provocation.
- Proficiency with personal computers and/or other electronic devices to include familiarity with, but not limited to, large format printers, plotters, copiers, scanners and phone systems.
- Ability to learn new or upgraded computer software as required.
- Ability to work overtime, including weekends as required.
Essential Functions
- Enter record information from proposed and as-built drawings, completion reports, service cards, and various other record sources into the District's Geographic Information System.
- Read and interpret maps and engineering drawings, especially as they pertain to gas and water facilities.
- Learn the District's GIS data entry standards, workflows, requirements and procedures to continually improve personal GIS skills.
- Research District and other records to obtain relevant information to include, but not limited to, reporting discrepancies/variances found and facilitating changes, as directed.
- Clearly communicate gas and water facility record information (in various forms and by various means) to District personnel and outside agencies.
- Accept written and verbal instruction in revising and updating GIS in collaboration with District personnel.
- Copy and file various engineering records for various purposes.
- Assist in GIS data clean up projects.
- Train in the duties of, and advance toward progression to, GIS Technician II.
- Assist in checking the work of others, as experience and proficiency allow.
- Work effectively in both an independent and in a team environment.
- Prioritize the health and well-being of the workforce within a safety-first work environment.
- Work professionally and efficiently, with increasingly limited supervision for extended periods.

Physical And Environmental Requirements
- Office: Work is primarily performed in an office setting amid normal conditions of dust, odors, fumes, office lighting and noise.
